Crime Fighting: How 2 founded Jailbirds Burglars Inc in Hyderabad

HYDERABAD: Two criminals meet in jail, become all-weather friends, and team up with Burglars Inc. No, that's not a cinematic story.

The notorious burglar, who was involved in 250 crimes and was sentenced to 207 crimes in his 40-year criminal history, was recently arrested by police in Karkhana. Along with Shankar, his accomplice, who drove an auto-rickshaw, D Dinakar, was also caught. The police retrieved 100 grams of gold jewelry, a two-wheeler and an auto-rickshaw from them. Dinakar's father was Shankar's former accomplice.

During the interrogation, 59-year-old Shankar admitted that a former inmate, Obaid, had helped him find shelter and dispose of the stolen trinkets, while Shankar made arrangements for Obaid's bail. Obaid was also arrested for property offenses.

On August 19, Shankar had left the central prison of Cherlapally. Within 10 days, however, he committed 20 offenses throughout the city.

Shankar and Obaid became friends in prison a few months ago. After Shankar was bailed, Obaid told him he would ask his wife to evict her Kamatipura home and Shankar could live there, sources in the Hyderabad police said.

After Shankar was released from prison, he turned to Dinakar and asked him to participate in the burglary. According to the police, Shankar, after committing the crimes, sought the help of Obaid's wife to dispose of the stolen trinkets.

Interestingly, Shankar paid Rs 50,000 to a lawyer from the money Obaid's wife received after disposing of the stolen jewelry to secure Obaid's bail. After Obaid was given a bail by the court, Shankar himself went to the detention center and handed in the bail rather than sending her through a lawyer, believing the usual procedure could take longer.

Shankar, who spent most of his life in prison, was familiar with prisoners and the prison staff. So he also sent fruits for his friends in prison.
